How to estimate your final grade

Use this formula for each category:
Weighted contribution = category average × category weight

For example, suppose your current average is 84 percent, it represents 75 percent of the course, and the final exam is worth 25 percent. To finish with an 88 percent:
(88 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 100
Under these assumptions, you would need a 100 percent on the final exam to reach 88 percent overall. If the target is 85 percent, the required exam score would be:
(85 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 88

Inputs and assumptions for a GPA calculator
An unweighted GPA usually assigns each letter grade a standard number of grade points, often on a four-point scale. A common example is A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, and F = 0. Worked GPA examples
Unweighted GPA with equal credits
Assume a student has five equally weighted courses with grade points of 4.0, 3.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 2.0. Add the points and divide by five:
(4.0 + 3.0 + 3.0 + 4.0 + 2.0) ÷ 5 = 3.2
The estimated semester GPA is 3.20 on this assumed scale.
Credit-weighted GPA
Now assume three courses have different credits:
- Course A: 4.0 grade points × 4 credits = 16 quality points
- Course B: 3.0 grade points × 3 credits = 9 quality points
- Course C: 2.0 grade points × 2 credits = 4 quality points
Total quality points are 29, and total credits are 9. The GPA is:
29 ÷ 9 = 3.22
For a cumulative GPA, combine quality points and attempted credits from all included terms rather than averaging semester GPAs directly. This matters when semesters contain different numbers of credits.
When to recalculate
Recalculate your final grade whenever a meaningful score is posted, a category weight changes, a missing assignment is entered, or a teacher applies a correction. Check the result before deciding how much time to spend on a final exam or which assignment needs attention first.
Update your semester GPA after final grades are confirmed. Update your cumulative GPA after each term, but use the official transcript calculation when applying for programs, scholarships, or other opportunities.
